What to do about summer?

Seems like we just got through talking about how to handle the chill of winter and now here we are getting ready for the sweltering summer. Out here, the summer brings triple digit heat. What do you do to stay cool during the “dog days”?

When I was a kid, one of our favorite things to do was to turn on the sprinklers and go running through them, laughing and screaming. When I was a teen, my folks had enough money to invest in a pool, which was fun for us and our friends. Somehow, though, my fondest memories are still of the sprinkler days. (I’m glad my mother never knew that!)

Remeber the Slip ‘N Slide? That was so much fun! The only problem was that the grass always turned yellow underneath the plastic sheet (the slide).

Well I’ve seen plenty of summers but for me it was swimming when ever the opportunity presented itself, another thing I would do to sleep on the hottest of days was to turn on the fan in the window around 4 pm this let in cool air and of course I would sleep naked with no covers on, then I would sleep on my side so that most of my body skin would be exposed to the cool air moving over me.
I do have a window air conditioner but it’s too small to cool the whole house, but with a window fan and the air conditioner it helps.
Oh yeah I can’t remember when I was a kid (kidding of course)

sidorski’s description of trying to keep cool while sleeping reminded me of when I was little and we had no air conditioning. I’d get a damp wash cloth and rub it on the bottom sheet so that it would get damp. The damp sheet got nice and cool. Then I’d shift positions as the damp sheet got warm under me. For some reason my mom got really mad at me for doing this! It’s not like I was soaking the sheet, just barely dampening it.

Dear Ayimp, Yeah, Mothers are like that but don’t forget that mothers know best.

As basic as this sounds, it really makes a difference in your body temperature if you drink ice water. So when I start getting too warm while in the house, instead of turning on the air conditioner and using all that energy (and expense), I drink some ice-cold water and that cools me down.
