My dad, the one standing in the middle with the dark shirt, wrote on the back: "Somehow this reminds me of an old picture of Pop with some railroad men. The pose and all. Some atavistic influence at work here?" His Pop was a railroad man for 50 years, working on the Northern Pacific railroad out of Montana. This picture was probably on Umnak Island.

  • kaforeman October 29, 2007 at 09:58AM I just discovered that my father had also answered my question about the large ball, 60 years before I would ask it. I just now found a duplicate copy of this photo in his album and on the back he had written: "Me and some of my boys. The big ball is a Japanese fish net float." So thanks to both Mr. Sidorski and a long-ago notation from my dad, I can now identify that large glass sphere!
  • sidorski October 28, 2007 at 01:20PM Dear Kim, The man in front of your dad went to a bar with me and I asked him what radar stood for and he warned me that it was secret but I later learned that it stood for radio detedting and ranging. Just then a man came up to us and asked the gaurd house lawyer for a dollar and he looked at the man and said "you have two arms and two legs so go work for it like I do" I was flagergassted..
  • sidorski October 22, 2007 at 06:33PM Dear Kim, Yes I know what that glass sphere is, it's what the Japnese fishermen used to hold up the top of their fishing nets. The balls would escape some times and float out to the aleutian islands, they also could be found all up and down the coast even as far as California.
  • kaforeman October 18, 2007 at 07:34AM Do you know what that glass sphere is?
  • sidorski October 18, 2007 at 06:39AM I recognize two men in this photo the man holding the glass sphere is Pappy Spirock and the man to his left who's name hasn't shown up yet, we used to call him the gaurd house lawyer as he seemed to know how to keep out of the gaurd house.
  • kaforeman October 17, 2007 at 09:26PM I don't know what type of ball the man in front is holding. It's much bigger than a soccer or basketball, and the surface is shiny. Does anyone recognize it?
