This is my maternal grandmother's family after they arrived in Lemon Cove, California in 1910. My grandmothers father's family, the Lovings, had lost three boys in the Stuart coal mine in West Virginia when an explosion in the mine killed 85 men in January 1907. They had nothing to keep them in West Virginia after that, and headed out to California. My grandmother, Carrie Shanklin, is the little girl in the center with the single large bow on the top of her head. Her sister Bessie ("the pretty one") stands behind her and has the black hair bow; Carrie's father William Shanklin stands in the background to Bessie's right, and on Bessie's left is their mother Matilda (aka Elizabeth or Tidie) Loving Shanklin. Directly below Carrie is the youngest sister, Thelma; brother Roscoe is the boy wearing the hat. The two Loving men are Charles at far right, with his wife Hulda, and Marshall at far left with his wife Doll. Several of the children are unidentified, but Luna and Leola Loving are two of the little girls. My hope is that someone from our Loving branch of the family will see this photo and I'll be able to find out what happened to those relatives. By the way, I love these old names--Luna, Leola, Hulda, Doll. You don't often hear names like that any more.
